Traditional Trading Cards and Sports Cards

A trading card is a small card, generally made out of thick paper like cardstock that usually has an image on the front and information about the picture on the back. When people think of trading cards, sports cards, like baseball cards are usually the first ones that come to mind. These cards have a photo of the sports player on the front and information and statistics about them on the back. Their main purposes are to collect, trade, and entertain.

Educational Trading Cards

Educational trading cards are a fun spin on traditional sports trading cards in that they still have a picture on the front and information on the back, but their main goal is to help the user learn something in a fun way. Typically they come in sets based around a particular topic. They can be used for a variety of purposes including:

  • Memorization like traditional flashcards
  • Rewards and incentives
  • Playing a variety of different games
  • Assessments
  • Teacher led instruction
  • Small group work
  • Independent study

Student Created Trading Cards

In addition to using pre-made trading cards with your students, having students make trading cards of their own is a powerful learning tool as well. When children make trading cards of their own, it helps cement their learning as they process the information to write down and draw their own pictures.
